There are four capacities that will help organizations to be effective:
Digital
Digital is about perpetual and exponential improvement of all facets of organizational life using both the tools and the mindsets of the digital world. Millennials are the first generation to have only worked in a digital workplace. It’s more of a mindset than a capacity.
The digital world allows for personalized focus on each customer, making the sales easier. Companies that embrace the digital mindset can innovate business product offerings, business models and management processes with a focus on continuous improvement. This is an essential framework in today’s world.
In order to make your organization digital, create space for experiments. Let your employees try new things without fearing punishment. Guide your employees and give them better feedback. Hire for culture fit and personal growth.
Clear
Clear in the Millennial era is about leveraging transparency in systems to allow better decision making. Clear organizations make smarter decisions that produce better results. Control the information that is being shared. The goal is to make the right information available in the right place at the right time. Clear organizations start with the assumption that information is and should be available.
Millennials think and work out loud. The internal work that gets done is never private. When everything is visible, employees will make better decisions about how to get the work done, without requiring any actual layers of management. The clients are in on the transparency as well. Define your company culture in order to make your organization clear.
Fluid
Fluid in the Millennial era is about systems that enable an integrated process of thinking, acting and learning at all levels of the organization. Fluid organizations serve customers more effectively.
A fluid hierarchy learns how to shift decision-making authority and action to the individuals and groups who are best equipped to be successful given the context. You can shift the power to those who have best access to the information or those who are closest to the customer. Allot different authorities and tasks to employees based on their skills and level of expertise.
Focus on the true mission of the organization. understand what drives success and clearly identify how being more fluid does or does not connect to that. The ability to work and communicate clearly, and work through conflicts is important in a fluid hierarchy.
Fast
Fast is about taking action at the exact moment that action is needed. An important aspect of this is social media. The trends are key in order to keep up the pace.
Millennials let go easily, while the rest of us hold on, and because of this, they’re always looking to the future. New technology is being developed constantly, and it’s almost impossible to stay ahead of the curve. It is necessary to give up control in this case. Build relationships that you can rely on, that will make it easier to give up control.
The previous three attributes will help with speed as well.
